Delivery Delayed is a sweet love story set in 1883, about a romance between a prim schoolmarm and a stoic steamship captain. Readers sit in on Lizzie's lessons, travel with Isaac to small islands at the north of Puget Sound, and join them both at the various social functions put together by their friends in the cycling club—from dinners to a dance. For those who want to experience the time even more deeply, the book's appendices give original nineteenth-century recipes for all the foods mentioned in the story and offer numerous suggestions for further readings of primary sources that inspired various scenes.

I found This Victorian Life utterly charming and am somewhat surprised, but very pleased, to learn that you have a blog. Surprisingly, I knew what a vasculum is -- my calligraphy teacher in England many years ago, Margaret T. Holden-Jones, had one and one of her Commonplace Books is in the V & A's collection. You would have loved her. Picture a diminutive woman who strongly resembled Queen Victoria herself, and whose father was friends with John Ruskin. Years before that (late 1960s), I did a term paper about Everyday Life in Victorian England and presented it entirely in Spencerian script. So you see why I could feel that you are a kindred spirit. How wonderful that you and Gabriel share the same dream and are on this adventure together. My late husband was a research physicist and informed me that, alas, time travel will only be possible into the future. But should he be proven wrong, then we have an agreement to meet in 1885.
