"The author closes this book with very best wishes to the whole bicycle and tricycle fraternity and that they may "live long and prosper."—Park, Col. Horace. Amateur Bicycle Repairing. Columbus, Ohio: Mann & Adair Publishers, 1885. p. 19.
Doing research for a book on cycling, I came across the quote below in an 1885 pamphlet—and did a double-take. I re-read it, then checked the book's date again: 1885. The original of this work on repairing Ordinary bicycles had been stamped with an official Library of Congress copyright to dispel any lingering doubt: December 7, 1885. After verifying this, I turned back to the quote, read it again, and had a good laugh. "The author closes this book with very best wishes to the whole bicycle and tricycle fraternity and that they may "live long and prosper."—Park, Col. Horace. Amateur Bicycle Repairing. Columbus, Ohio: Mann & Adair Publishers, 1885. p. 19. It reminded me of a photoshopped picture which circulated a few weeks ago after the passing of Leonard Nimoy. Considering Mr. Nimoy's renowned good sense of humor, I like to think he would have appreciated the juxtaposition.
